Too much fiction! Britain asks Netflix to add a fiction statement to The Crown

The Crown Season 4 was released on Netflix. As this season involves popular historical events such as the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, it has attracted widespread attention. Although it received a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 9.5 on IMDb, some of the fictional plots were complained about.

According to foreign media reports, the British government even asked Netflix to add a disclaimer that "some of the plots are fictional" to the series. The series involves Princess Diana's bulimia, her refusal to accompany Prince Charles on a mountain hike in Australia, and Charles' frequent phone calls with Camilla during their marriage. Many of these plots are considered fictional.

British Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told the British media: "This is a beautifully crafted work of fiction, and like any other television work, Netflix should have been very clear from the beginning that it was just that."

The chancellor, who plans to write to Netflix this week to voice his concerns, added: "Without a statement, I am concerned that young viewers who have not experienced these historical events may mistake fiction for fact."

Producer Pete Morgan's representative works include "The Queen", "Foster vs. Nixon", "The Last King of Scotland", "Rush", "Bohemian Rhapsody", etc. When adapting historical events into movies, fictional elements are obviously inevitable.

Coincidentally, the series has also sparked complaints in Australia, where former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke disliked the British royal family in the fourth season and called the Queen a "pig." Australian media said Hawke had never said that word.

Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, also said in a recent interview: "Americans told me that they watched The Crown like they were taking a history class. In fact, they were not taking a class," he told ITV last weekend. "There is a lot of speculation and a lot of invention in this series, isn't there? You can say it is adapted from history, but it is not all history."
