Chinese director Zhao Ting's new film "Nomadland" won the highest Golden Lion Award in Venice

The 77th Venice Film Festival closed last night Beijing time. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it still insisted on being held in person. Chinese director Zhao Ting's new work "Nomadland" won the Golden Lion Award. The film was also recognized by the media, taking first place in the Italian media program and the international program, and also received 100% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes.

Zhao Ting is another Chinese director recognized by the Golden Lion Award in the new century, following Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" in 2007, Jia Zhangke's "Still Life" in 2006, and Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005.

In other important awards, Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa won the Best Director Award for "The Wife of a Spy." "White Widow" Vanessa Kirby, whose two leading works were both shortlisted for the main competition unit, won the Best Actress Award for "Pieces of a Woman."

American media predicts that Zhao Ting may become the first Asian woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. It is worth mentioning that her next directorial work is "Eternals" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Nomadland" tells a story like this: Fern, who lost her husband, even lost her job and home in the Great Recession. The small town in Nevada where she spent almost her entire life has its zip code no longer valid on the map. In her sixties, she has no home to rely on and is forced to embark on a journey of wandering while working.

In order to minimize the cost of living, she became a modern nomad living in a van. During this difficult wandering, she met and got to know many van dwellers, and gained friendship and support. The Hollywood Reporter commented that the film is a powerful character exploration of another type of freedom fighter.

The Los Angeles Times believes that Zhao Ting's skills are more refined in Nomadland, and the film seamlessly connects fiction and non-fiction. Entertainment Weekly said: Zhao Ting has become an outstanding recorder of certain Americans who have not forgotten - primitive, unrestrained, and on the edge.
