According to Deadline, Sony Pictures CEO said Venom 3 will be the last movie in the series. The first Venom movie starring Tom Hardy marked the beginning of Sony's Spider-Man universe, but Spider-Man himself has never appeared in this universe series of movies. Instead of using Spider-Man, Sony let villains and supporting characters take the lead. Unlike the subsequent Morbius and Mrs. Spider, Venom was a success. However, the upcoming third film in the series, Venom: The Last Rage, will be the end. Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, made the announcement in an offhand interview with Deadline, saying, "The third and final Venom movie is going to be huge." What's most surprising is that, despite Venom and Eddie Brock having a cameo in Spider-Man: No Homecoming, Tom Hardy's Venom never got the chance to meet Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Sony often mentions that it owns the rights to 900 Marvel characters, but Venom is one of the few on their roster that actually stars in a starring role. Most of the other characters can't sustain their own comic book series, let alone a movie or TV show. That's why there's a good chance Sony will eventually change course and reboot the Venom film series, or recast the character. |
