Marvel President: We did release too many movies in a short period of time

Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito recently acknowledged that the company had previously released too much content in a short period of time, leading to so-called "Marvel fatigue," and he vowed that the company is now changing direction.

In an interview with Empire magazine, D'Esposito said that the period when many people are no longer interested in Marvel's works is "tough", but he believes that Deadpool and Wolverine in July this year will be able to help Marvel regain its footing again.

"If we had stayed ahead that would have been the worst thing that could have happened to us," he said. "We took a bit of a hit but we will come back strong."

"Maybe when you do too much, you dilute yourself. We're not going to do that again. We've learned our lesson. Maybe two or three movies a year and one or two shows, instead of four movies and four shows."

This is the same plan that Bob Iger, CEO of Marvel's parent company Disney, said during an earnings call when discussing Marvel's future output. The report also quoted Marvel head Kevin Feige, who previously said he felt "more comfortable as an underdog."

Feige said most people don’t think Marvel Studios can operate at the scale that it does, but he thinks the struggles of 2023 could lead to “far greater than expected” success in 2024: “You’d have to be in a world of isolation to not know that the last few Marvel movies haven’t been the global hits that many of the previous ones have been.”
