The Joker is an independent film that is completely original and its cinematography is praised as a high-level achievement

One of the most anticipated movies of 2019 is the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. The movie will be released widely in October this year, but it will be screened at the Venice Film Festival this month and the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Cameron Bailey, co-chairman and artistic director of the Toronto Film Festival, has already praised Joker after watching it.

Bailey told the Toronto Sun that the film was "terrific" and worthy of being screened on the festival's biggest stage. He said the story, while a departure from the comic book, was "really wonderfully original" and that the cinematography was highly praised.

“First of all, I can only say that Joker is fantastic. That’s why it deserves to be on our biggest screen in the showroom. It’s a truly original take on the character of the Joker, not based on an existing story but an entirely new one starring one of the great actors of modern cinema, Joaquin Phoenix.”

“It’s interesting in the way it depicts the imagery and the tone it attempts. The story takes place in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the whole look and feel is like it was made at that time. It looks deliberately rough, with references to Martin Scorsese’s filming techniques, and it feels like a high-level new achievement in film photography. Even though the material it uses is very ordinary, this approach shows that it has great ambition.”

Director Todd Philips admitted in a previous interview that the new independent film "Joker" does not follow "anything" in the comics. Philips said: "We didn't take anything from the comics, people will go crazy for it (laughs). We just wrote our own version of the Joker and gave him a unique background of birth, which also made me experience a different kind of fun. We are not even portraying the Joker, we are just nurturing a Joker, and this is his story."
