Mulholland Drive director David Lynch: Netflix rejected the movie I had conceived for years

David Lynch, the director of "Mulholland Drive" and "Twin Peaks", who has not made a movie for many years, recently accepted an exclusive interview with Deadline. He revealed that the animated film he had been conceiving for many years had just been rejected by Netflix. "The world is different now," but he has not given up hope.

The film is an animated film called "Snootworld" and tells an old-fashioned fairy tale. Lynch began writing the script with screenwriter Caroline Thompson 20 years ago. Thompson often collaborates with director Tim Burton, and her works include "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Addams Family". She wrote the first and third acts of the script, and Lynch wrote the second act.

Lynch said: "Snootworld is a bit of an old-fashioned story, and now animation is more about telling superficial jokes. Old-fashioned fairy tales are considered to be whining, and obviously people don't want to watch them. The world is different now, and it is always easier to say no than to agree."

Being rejected by Netflix did not make him give up: "I like this story, the kind that both children and adults can enjoy. I have never made a direct animation, but with today's computers, I may be able to do something surprising."

Lynch hasn't directed a movie in almost 20 years since Inland Empire, but he made the TV series Twin Peaks return and also guest-starred in Spielberg's Dream House in 2022. As for what his next project might be and what he's doing recently, Lynch said: I can't say yet.
