According to foreign media Hollywoodreporter, the world film market in the last century should have been dominated by legendary film figures such as Griffith and Chaplin, but the United States' dominance as the leader of the film market will end in 2019 and will be replaced by China next year. According to a new forecast from PwC, this year's US box office revenue may end up reaching $12.11 billion, while China's projected box office revenue is $11.05 billion. But by 2020, China's rapidly growing box office will surpass the US, reaching $12.28 billion, surpassing the US's $11.93 billion, and in the future, China will dominate the film market. China, with a population of 1.4 billion compared to the U.S.’s 328.9 million, has sold more movie tickets than any other country since 2015, and 2020 marks a sea change: China will lead the world in box-office revenue for the first time. Some may be surprised to learn that the theatrical industry as a whole will continue to grow through 2023, 4% annually globally and 1% annually in the U.S., said CJ Bangah, an analyst at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “With the rise of home video on demand, there were a lot of people who thought that movies were going to die,” Bangah said. “But tickets, admissions and screen revenues are all expected to increase.” |
