Oda did not completely let go and required Netflix's "One Piece" series settings to be consistent with the original work

In a recent interview, Matt Owens, the producer of Netflix's "One Piece" live-action series, said that the original author Eiichiro Oda was not willing to completely let go of the project to Netflix, and he put forward two requirements that Netflix must comply with.

The first requirement Oda made was related to the background story of the Straw Hat Pirates: the background stories of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji must remain unchanged. Matt Owens said: "Who they are, what their dreams and motivations are, how Luffy wins them over when he meets them and helps them rediscover these dreams, these are all crucial."

Similarly, Oda also requires that all devil fruit abilities are fixed and cannot be changed. Matt Owens said: "The specific devil fruit abilities and other skills are carefully designed by Oda. He is very imaginative about what different people can do and what the rules are."

Netflix's live-action series "One Piece" will be aired on August 31st.
