■ Story

The year is 2070, and a mysterious giant object, thought to be an invasion weapon, appears in Japan. It is another mysterious giant that drives it away. Shortly after this incident, Subaru Muryou transfers to Misumaru Junior High School in Tenmou City. He is a boy with a mysterious aura, wearing a school uniform that is rare in this era. After getting acquainted with him, Murata Hajime, an ordinary junior high school boy, becomes embroiled in a major incident on a cosmic scale.

■Explanation

"Gakuen Senki Muryou" is a TV animation created by Tatsuo Sato, known for "Fly! Isami", "Martian Successor Nadesico" and "Nekojiru Kusa", and was written, composed and directed by him. It was broadcast on NHK Satellite 2 from May 8 to December 4, 2001.

Although it is a science fiction anime, the content is by no means unrealistic. It is a "normal" story set in a very ordinary school and town, with very ordinary people doing their thing. In fact, it may not be quite "normal" as the student council members fight with mysterious powers and aliens wearing aloha shirts roam the town. "Gakuen Senki Muryou" is an animation that feels "normal" but is a little bit different, with a mysterious flavor. The overall mood is refreshing and clean. The Japanese taste typical of director Tatsuo Sato is also an appeal of this work.

The character design is by Yoshimatsu Takahiro, who has worked on such titles as "Future GPX Cyber Formula" and "TRIGUN" and is also known as manga artist "Something Yoshimatsu". Animation is by Madhouse, a long-established production company that has produced such titles as "Cardcaptor Sakura" and "METROPOLIS". Another topic of conversation is that the music is handled by Ohno Yuji, known for "Lupin the Third", among others. It's been 17 years since he last worked on the music for an anime other than "Lupin the Third".

■ Main Characters

・Subaru Muryo
In the midst of the alien turmoil, he transfers to the school wearing a school uniform that is rare in this era. He is calm and collected, and gives the impression of being well-mannered, but in reality he has great power. He always behaves naturally even when Nayuta and Kyoichi try to pick a fight with him, which only provokes them further. However, he doesn't seem to mind at all. With his arrival, many things begin to change dramatically.
Hajime Murata
The other main character is Muryou's classmate. He is the class representative of Muryou's class and is an honor student type of boy. He is liked by everyone, but he is not a people-pleaser; he is an unusual person who somehow warms to both allies and enemies. Having met Muryou, he gets involved in various troubles, but he eventually grows a lot from those experiences.
・Nayuta Moriyama
She is the eldest daughter of the Moriyama family in the north, one of the five Mamori families, and the main pilot of "Shingu." She is in the second year of middle school like Muryou and is the vice president of the student council. She has a tough personality and a high sense of pride, making her difficult to approach at school. She has a competitive spirit against Muryou and fights him at every opportunity, but she always ends up destroying herself in one-man sumo. Her true nature comes out through her interactions with Muryou and Hajime.
・Kyouichi Moriguchi
He is the eldest son of the Moriguchi family in the East, one of the five Mamori families. He is a third-year middle school student and the vice president of the student council. At first glance, he appears cool and handsome, but he is actually the most passionate person. He may seem cynical, but he gets angry easily. He is the one who called out Muryou shortly after he transferred to the school. He is a black belt in ancient martial arts, but his fighting power is no match for Muryou. He is worried about Harumi.
・Harumi Mineo
Student council secretary. Second year middle school student. Successor of Tenmouryu ancient martial arts. Her mission is to protect Kyoichi. Although she has a quiet and modest personality, she is actually the successor of the ancient martial art "Tenmouryu" and is very skilled. She is torn between her desire to protect Kyoichi and her feelings of love for him.
・Tsumori Hachiyo
He is the second son of the Tsumori family in the south, one of the Mamori Five Families. He is a third-year junior high school student and the student council president. He is a good-natured man just like he looks. He is a simple but efficient MC at the student council meetings, and always gets laughs. Because of his personality, he is highly trusted. He is also a man of considerable strength.
・Morihata Shun
He is the third son of the Moriki family in the west, one of the five Mamori families. He is a second-year middle school student and the student council treasurer. He is popular with the upperclassmen for his cute looks, but he is also conscious of this and acts accordingly, making him a rather calculating boy. Among the student council members, he is as calm and mature as Yatsuba, but he also has a mischievous and playful side. He also serves as a media committee member and is talented at hosting.
・Subaru Setsuna
Muryou's older sister. She is a self-proclaimed college student with a lot of free time, who is strangely sexy and innocent at the same time. She seems to be living alone in Tokyo now, but she is always popping up in Tenmou City and messing with Muryou and the others. In fact, she seems to have an unfathomable past and secrets. Her special skill (?) is collecting local specialties from all over the country.
・Murata Futaba
Hajime's younger sister, a sixth grader. A cheeky but very "chappy" bright girl. She is a looker and easily falls in love. She fell in love with Muryou at first sight, and her pursuit is getting more and more heated with each passing day.
・Kyoko Murata
Hajime's mother. She is a cheerful and efficient person. She treats her children like friends in a good way. She is also a good cook. Her husband, Kazuo, a trading company employee, is currently working away from home.
・Asougi
Muryou's foster father, commonly known as "Grandpa". He looks like an old man and calls himself a sage, but he wields a "power" that even Muryou cannot match. And yet, he has a strangely casual side to him. He seems to have an old connection with Momoe Mamori.
・Momoe Sanemori
The head of the Mamori Five Families. He has a calm yet dignified aura and is trusted by the members of the branch families. When he was young, he had the power of Shingu, just like Nayuta does now. He is a good confidant for Nayuta.
・Atsushi Kawamori
He is also a classmate of Muryou and Hajime. He is a big boy, but he is a kindhearted boy. His kindness shows here and there. Because of this, he ends up joining Muryou and Hajime's club activities.
・Jiro Narita
A classmate of Muryou and Hajime. He is the most playful student in class 2C, and picks on teachers and classmates at every opportunity. Perhaps because of his kindness, he later gets involved in Hajime's club activities.
・Toshio Mikami
A classmate of Muryou and Hajime. He is knowledgeable about computers and other machines. He is always calm and doesn't get easily shaken, but he is actually quite shy. Was he rejected by Futaba in the past? He plays an active role in establishing the "Festival Club" despite his calm demeanor.
・Hikaru Inagaki
A third-year student at Mito Junior High School. As the media committee chair, she is active as an event host. She is quite shrewd, refraining from disclosing the sources she interviews. She also has a good relationship with the student council president, Hachiyo.
・Tadakazu Yamamoto
Muryou's homeroom teacher. He teaches Japanese history. He is one of the people who knows the secrets of Tenmou City. He gives the impression of being a rough and tumble country dad. However, he is actually quite strong, using unique martial arts and strength.
・Hiromi Isozaki
He is a physical education teacher at Mito Junior High School and the homeroom teacher for the Yahaba, but his real job is as an Altinn star who is a solar system observer for the Security Committee of the Galactic Federation. He is always cool and respected by the other aliens around him, but he seems to really like alcohol.
・Vern Alien Jirtosh A mysterious, frivolous playboy in an aloha shirt. He's always on the go, and it's hard to tell what he's thinking. He also has a strangely strong sense of chivalry. He's a first-class diplomat endorsed by the Galaxy Federation, but he's also a mysterious figure.
・Zaigle Alien Wennull A tea-loving alien. He has an overly serious personality, calmly analyzing everything and acting accordingly. He was initially wary of Vern Alien Ziltosh, but they have now reached a temporary truce and are living together.
・Zaigle Alien Velosh A high-ranking officer on the planet Zaigle and Wenul's superior. Captain of the space battleship Jilton. He came to Earth to obtain the power of "Shingu". He is highly trusted by his subordinates.

Story and Themes

"Gakuen Senki Muryou [Complete Edition]" is set in Japan in 2070 and begins with the appearance of a mysterious giant object and a giant who drives it away. This incident triggers Subaru Muryou to transfer to Mito Junior High School in Tenmou City, and the story unfolds. With the appearance of Muryou, Hajime Murata, an ordinary middle school boy, becomes involved in a cosmic-scale incident.

The theme of this work is the boundary between "normal" and "unusual." As everyday school life intersects with a cosmic-scale battle, the characters reexamine their own definition of "normal" and grow as they go. In particular, the friendship between Muryou and Hajime, as well as the relationships between the student council members, are depicted in depth, evoking sympathy from viewers.

character

The characters in this work are unique and charming. The protagonist, Muryou, is a gentle yet powerful mysterious transfer student, and his presence is at the center of the story. Muryou's classmate, Hajime, is an honor student who gets caught up in trouble and grows as a person. The student council members are also each unique, and Nayuta's pride, Kyoichi's passion, and Harumi's modest strength all add excitement to the story.

Of particular note is the character of Muryou's older sister, Setsuna. Her character, which is both sexy and innocent, gives viewers a fresh impression. In addition, supporting characters such as Asogi, Muryou's adoptive parent, and Momoe, the head of the Mamori family, are also attractive and support the story.

Visuals and Music

Character design is by Takahiro Yoshimatsu, whose unique touch adds depth to the work. In particular, the designs that bring out the individuality of the characters, such as Muryou's school uniform and Nayuta's uniform, are impressive. In addition, the mechanic design is by Kunihiko Inoue, creating a unique worldview that combines a sci-fi feel with a Japanese taste.

The music was composed by Yuji Ohno, and it was a hot topic as it was his first time producing music for an anime in 17 years. The opening theme "TAKE" and the ending theme "Begin" are important elements that enhance the atmosphere of the work. Yuji Ohno's music has the power to arouse the emotions of the viewer as the story unfolds, further enhancing the appeal of the work.

Isami" and "Martian Successor Nadesico," and his unique sensibility is reflected in this work. In particular, the production, which incorporates a Japanese taste, gives viewers a fresh impression.

The animation is produced by Madhouse, and their technical skills and experience support the quality of the work. In particular, the attention to detail in the battle scenes and the movements of the mechanics is superb. The color design and art are also excellent, richly expressing the worldview of the work.

Recommendation

I highly recommend "Gakuen Senki Muryou [Omnibus Edition]" to anyone who likes science fiction anime or the work of director Tatsuo Sato. It is also recommended for those who like stories that depict character growth and friendship. Because it is in the form of an omnibus edition, you can enjoy the entire series in one go, making it perfect for first-time viewers.

Furthermore, this work is particular about its music and visuals, so it will be enjoyed by those who are interested in music and animation technology. In particular, Yuji Ohno's music is an important element in enhancing the atmosphere of the work, so it is recommended for music fans as well.
