One night, Kodai Ryuta, an elementary school student who loves dinosaurs, witnesses the fall of a meteorite. When he heads to the site of the impact with his fellow D-Kids members Rex and Malm, he finds a card with a dinosaur on it and three stone tablets with different designs. As Ryuta fiddles with the stone tablets, a live Triceratops appears before his eyes. The three are thrilled, but end up being chased by the Triceratops. As they frantically fiddle with the stone tablets, the Triceratops shrinks to a small size and becomes attached to Ryuta. Ryuta names the Triceratops "Gabu" and decides to keep it as a pet.

However, the next day, Usarapa, Ed, and Noratti of the Act Gang appear with a Tyrannosaurus and try to steal Gabu. Ryuta and the others try to escape with Gabu, but are cornered. At that moment, Ryuta's father, Professor Kodai, rushes over with the Dino Holder, turns Gabu back into a card, and turns him into an adult to fight the Act Gang. Gabu unleashes his special move, "Electric Charge," and repels the Act Gang, but Gabu and the Tyrannosaurus return to cards.
