Fist of the North Star: Tokiden - A moving story and profound themes

Fist of the North Star: Legend of the True Savior, Tokiden, was released as an OVA on March 26, 2008 and tells the moving story of the life of Toki, a legendary character from the Hokuto Shinken. The film is based on the manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, directed by Kobun Shizuno, and produced by TMS Entertainment and North Stars Pictures. Each episode is 60 minutes long and follows Toki from his childhood to his fateful battle with Raoh.

story

Toki is the closest person to inheriting the Hokuto Shinken, but he has been afflicted by an illness caused by the effects of nuclear war and is informed that he does not have much time left to live. Sarah, a female doctor at the Hokuto Temple, conveys this news to his master Ryuken, who, after much deliberation, appoints Kenshiro as the next successor. Toki accepts this decision and decides to set out on a journey to save the people suffering in the despairing end of the century. Sarah also understands Toki's wishes and chooses to set out on the journey with him.

During their journey, Toki and Sara continue to save many people, but Toki's illness progresses, and before his life ends, he decides to challenge Raoh to a duel in order to fulfill a promise he made to Raoh when he was a child. This story portrays Toki's humanity and his strong will, deeply moving viewers.

Commentary

"Tokiden" is the fourth installment of the Hokuto Shinken series, and details Toki's childhood through to his battle with Raoh. The original character Sara plays an important role in supporting Toki, and delves deeper into his actions and feelings that were not mentioned in the original work. This work depicts how Toki continues to save people in the world at the end of the century, and focuses on his efforts to fulfill a promise he will never forget.

Director Kobun Shizuno's skillful portrayal of Toki's humanity and his passion for the fight leaves a strong impression on viewers, while character designer Junichi Hayama's beautiful visuals and Yuki Kajiura's moving music also add to the film's appeal.

The cast of this work is impressive, with Abe Hiroshi as Kenshiro, Ukaji Tsuyoshi as Raoh, Ishida Yuriko as Yuria, Horiuchi Kenyuu as Toki, and Hirano Aya as Sara. These voice actors express the emotions of each character realistically, adding depth to the story.

Main Characters

Kenshiro <br> School: Hokuto Shinken Techniques: Hokuto Hyakuretsuken, Tenpa Kassatsu, Muso Tensei, etc. 64th successor of Hokuto Shinken. As a baby, he was sent to Ryuken along with Raoh and Toki, where he trained as a successor of Hokuto Shinken. Although he lost a battle with Shin after the outbreak of nuclear war, he challenged Shin, who was reigning as the leader of KING's army, to a rematch a year later and won. Furthermore, in order to resolve the turmoil that began with the issue of who would succeed the Hokuto Shinken, he rescued Toki, who had been imprisoned by Raoh, and clashed with Raoh, the eldest of the four Hokuto brothers, to a draw. After winning a battle with Souther, he faced Raoh again in a battle over Yuria, and won after a fierce battle. Later, when Yuria died of illness, he joined the Hokuto army, which was rebelling against the Imperial army, led by Lin and Bat. He engaged in a deadly battle with Falco of the Imperial army. After suppressing the Imperial Army, he travels to Shura Country in pursuit of the kidnapped Rin. He defeats his brother Hyo and Kaioh, who rules Shura Country. After pacifying Shura Country, he tells Raoh's son Ryu how to prepare himself as the successor to the Hokuto Shinken, and then disappears into the wilderness.

Julia <br> Born as a commander of the Nanto Rokusei, she is destined to be the Mother Star in the Nanto Rokusei Ken. She is Ryuga's younger sister, and Juza is her half-brother. She was determined to live with Kenshiro, but was abducted by Shin and was then left in the care of Rihaku and the others. When the Kenoh army led by Raoh became more active, she led the Nanto Gosha Sei to clash with the Kenoh army in order to cooperate with Kenshiro. After Kenshiro defeated Raoh, she spent some time at rest with Kenshiro before passing away due to illness.

Raoh <br> School: Hokuto Shinken Techniques: Hokuto Goshouha, Tenshou Bonretsu, Muso Insatsu, etc. Eldest son of the four Hokuto brothers. Older brother of Toki, and younger brother of Kaioh, who ruled the land of Shura. When his homeland was invaded by a military nation, he was sent to Ryuken along with Kenshiro and Toki to pass on the Hokuto Shinken. When Kenshiro was chosen to be the successor to Hokuto Shinken, he killed Ryuken, who tried to seal his fist. After the nuclear war, he imprisoned Toki and organized the Kenoh Army, building a major force. When Kenshiro freed Toki, he went out to battle himself, defeating Rei and Toki before facing off against Kenshiro. When this battle ended in a draw and the Kenoh Army collapsed, he focused on treating his wounds for a while. Later, when Souther of the Holy Emperor Army, who was considered his greatest enemy, was defeated by Kenshiro, he declared the revival of the Kenoh Army. He clashed with the army of Yuria, which began to act at the same time. Through these battles, he defeated all of the Nanto Gosha Stars, including Juza and Fudo. However, in his final battle with Kenshiro, he was defeated by a powerful blow and died, raising his fist to the sky.

Toki <br> School: Hokuto Shinken Techniques: Tensho Hyakuretsu Ken, Hokuto Yusei Danjin Ken, Hokuto Yusei Hagan Ken, etc. The second son of the four Hokuto brothers, and the younger brother of Raoh and Kaioh. When his homeland was invaded, he was entrusted to Ryuken along with Raoh and Kenshiro. At one point, he was expected to be the next successor to Hokuto Shinken, but he was exposed to the fallout from the nuclear war and gave up on the path to succession. He then pursued his long-held dream of becoming a doctor. After that, he revived a village filled with sick people, but when the village was attacked by bandits, he was replaced by Amiba and imprisoned by Cassandra. After being rescued from Cassandra by Kenshiro, he challenges Raoh, but is defeated. After the Kenoh army temporarily loses power, he cooperates with Rei, who challenges Juda, and watches the battle between Kenshiro and Souther with Raoh. When Raoh regains his power, he confronts him again, but due to his illness he is unable to demonstrate his true strength and is defeated by Raoh. Afterwards, he offers himself to Ryuuga, who is trying to gauge Kenshiro's strength, and finally, after witnessing Ryuuga's death after being defeated by Kenshiro, he dies.

Sarah <br> A female doctor at the Hokuto dojo. Ryuken also trusts her, and she is the only one who knows Toki's secret. She understands Toki's will and sets off with him into the wilderness.
