Historical adaptation "Leningrad" will start production, Michael Hirst will serve as screenwriter

Michael Hirst is a British screenwriter and producer. His two historical dramas, The Tudors and Vikings, have both won Emmy Awards. According to Deadline media reports, Michael Hirst will serve as the screenwriter of the historical adaptation "Leningrad".

The drama will be based on the 2011 book "Leningrad" by writer Anna Reid. Similar to "Anne's Diary", the book is narrated in a diary format. The book tells the story of the Battle of Leningrad, a tragic battle in the Soviet Patriotic War during World War II. The Nazi German army used the method of siege but not attack to consume the Soviet Red Army. The entire battle lasted for two and a half months, and nearly one million civilians died of food shortages.

Hirst said the show's main characters will mostly be female, explaining: "This is the case not only because they are often overlooked in history, but also because most Soviet men were already fighting at the front."

The show will be produced by producer Maura Axelrod overseen by Orangery, whose head Alexey Kuzmichev and his wife Svetlana are both Russian. The actors who will star in the show are currently unknown.
