Bona chairman blasts movie ticket price of 70 million, box office of 8 million is service fee

Have you ever noticed the service charge on the ticket when watching a movie? Although most of them are only a few dollars, they add up to a considerable amount.

During the forum session of the Shanghai International Film Festival, many bigwigs in the domestic film and television circles appeared, including Yu Dong, chairman and president of Bona Film Group, and Zeng Maojun, president of Wanda Film Group.

According to media reports, Yu Dong bluntly stated that the box office revenue on the day before the Dragon Boat Festival was 70 million, and 8 million was service fees. He pointed out that for a movie ticket worth more than 30 yuan, the service fee was at least 3 yuan, which was more than 10%. "The funds used to develop the film and television industry and support the production of key films have returned to the film and television industry. Where did the service fees go? The companies took them."

At the meeting, Zeng Maojun also admitted that "During the Spring Festival this year, everyone saw that the box office increased, but in fact the total number of visitors did not increase. It was the ticket price that increased. A careful analysis showed that the fastest-growing thing was the service fee."

Data shows that the national film industry special fund collection rate is 5%. Yu Dong hopes that ticketing platforms represented by Tao Piaopiao and Maoyan will change their pricing strategies so that the service fee does not exceed 5% of the special fund.

According to the data provided by Yu Dong, the annual box office of movies in mainland China in 2020 was 20.4 billion, and 64.4 billion in 2019, which means that due to the epidemic in 2020, the film industry lost 44 billion in cash flow.
