800 million loss in "The Wandering Earth" and other movie piracy cases, sentenced to 12.8 million in compensation

During the Spring Festival last year, eight domestic films including "The Wandering Earth" and "Crazy Alien" were released and became hits, with the highest single film box office reaching nearly 5 billion yuan.

According to the Daily Economic News, however, almost at the same time, high-definition pirated movies flooded the Internet. The Ministry of Public Security quickly deployed public security organs in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan and other places to carry out a series of special projects to crack down on pirated movies during the Spring Festival, and arrested a number of criminal suspects. Wu Jing, Huang Bo, Han Han, and Shen Teng once formed a "Victims Alliance" for this matter and sat on the podium of the Ministry of Public Security's press conference.

On September 25, the Yangzhou Intermediate People's Court opened a trial on the case. The four defendants were sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from 4 to 6 years in the first instance, and fined a total of RMB 12.8 million. The illegal gains were confiscated and turned over to the state treasury.

Monitoring data from the China Copyright Association showed that eight Lunar New Year films had 38,900 infringing links, with a total of 82.882 million clicks, causing box office losses of approximately 787 million yuan.
