Will Smith resigns from Academy: no longer a voter but can be nominated

A few days after the incident of Will Smith beating up Chris Rock at the Oscars this year, Will Smith announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organizer of the Oscars. He is no longer eligible to vote for the Oscars, but can still be nominated, attend the ceremony and keep the Oscar he has won. Smith said he would accept any reasonable follow-up measures from the Academy and would be committed to change and not let violence prevail.

Will Smith said in a statement: "My behavior at the 94th Academy Awards was shocking, painful and inexcusable. It hurt Locke and his family, his own family and friends, all the guests and the global audience. It betrayed the trust of the Academy and deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate their extraordinary work. I am also heartbroken."

Will Smith also said that he decided to resign in order to put everyone's attention back on those who deserve attention for their achievements, and hoped that the Academy could continue to focus on doing extraordinary work in supporting the creativity and artistry of film.

The college has accepted Smith's resignation and will proceed with disciplinary proceedings against him, which may include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions permitted by the bylaws and standards of conduct at the April 18 board of governors meeting.
