The movie "Nine-story Demon Tower" was finally found to have infringed copyright, and the author of "Ghost Blowing the Light" was awarded 50,000 yuan in compensation

On August 10, it was reported that the movie "Nine-story Demon Tower" infringed the copyright of the novel "Ghost Blows Out the Light" and was finally ordered to stop distributing the movie and compensate the author of the novel Zhang Muye 50,000 yuan.

According to the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, the court ruled that the act of China Film Corporation, Dreamer Company and LeTV in adapting the novel "Ghost Blows Out the Light: The Mystical Ancient City" into the movie "Nine-story Demon Tower" infringed Zhang Muye's right to protect the integrity of the novel.

The court ultimately determined that China Film Corporation, Dreamer Group, and LeTV had infringed Zhang Muye's right to protect the integrity of the novel in question, and ordered them to stop disseminating the film in question, publicly apologize to Zhang Muye to eliminate the impact, and compensate Zhang Muye 50,000 yuan in mental damages.

"Nine-story Demon Tower" is a 3D disaster adventure film directed by Lu Chuan, starring Zhao Youting, Yao Chen, Tang Yan, Feng Shaofeng, Li Chen, Li Guangjie, Wang Qingxiang, Feng Li, Wu Jun, Wang Deshun, etc. It was released in 2015. The film is adapted from the novel "Ghost Blowing Light: The Ancient City of Jingjue", which mainly tells the story of the expedition members Hu Bayi and Shirley Yang who went deep into the hinterland of Kunlun Mountain. With the intervention of the mysterious organization 749 Bureau, they uncovered a secret history of humans and ghosts separated by a thousand years.

Since the film was released, the original author Tianxia Bachang has expressed dissatisfaction because the content of the film has changed too much from the original work "Ghost Blowing Light: The Ancient City of Jingjue". The theatrical version has not yet given the author a signature, but only the name of the work. Tianxia Bachang took the producer to court in 2016, accusing it of infringing on its right of signature and demanding compensation of 1 million yuan. On June 28, 2016, the case was pronounced in the first instance in the Xicheng Court. The court held that the defendant China Film Corporation and other four defendants had infringed the plaintiff's right of signature, and ordered the four producers to sign "Tianxia Bachang" when disseminating the movie "Nine-story Demon Tower" and publish a statement and apologize for the infringement. After the first instance judgment, Tianxia Bachang continued to appeal. After three years, the second instance judgment was finally settled.
