Despicable Me 4 will have a sequel, and it is not ruled out that the dad will get older

Despicable Me 4 director Chris Renaud shared some thoughts on the future of the franchise.

The Gru and Minions franchise has grown so big since the original film hit theaters in 2010 that it's easy to lose track of how many movies there are in total. Now in theaters, Despicable Me 4 is Gru's fourth film and the sixth in the franchise as a whole.

Despite all the movies already released, Gru and the Minions continue to be a cash cow for Illumination Entertainment, and the franchise's head honchos seem optimistic about the continued growth this universe can bring.

Chris Renaud has said that for this film, they took an approach similar to The Simpsons, where the characters never age no matter how many years pass, but in the future, time may change.

“We have so many characters in this world now that it’s a decision to make again,” Leonard explained. “If you age them in a particular movie, it raises more questions about what’s going on in their lives.”

“But I don’t think that would stop us from making a new movie where, say, Edith takes over her dad’s villain career 20 years in the future, or whatever. I think we can try all kinds of ideas.”

It is not clear where the series will go in the future, but there is no doubt that we will see a sequel. Despicable Me 4 has landed in North America on July 3 and will be released in mainland China on July 12. Gru's family has added a new member - Baby Gru II, and Gru's three daughters will appear again.
