The release of "Mulan" drove a 68% surge in Disney+ downloads and a 193% increase in paid subscriptions

According to recent media reports, the release of Disney's live-action film "Mulan" on Disney+ on September 4 has boosted demand for the streaming application Disney+. According to statistics from research firm Sensor Tower, from September 4 to September 6, Disney+ downloads soared 68% to 890,000 times. Consumer spending on the platform also increased by 193% from a week ago to $12 million.

However, the above figures only reflect the number of downloads of Disney+ from Apple and Google's online stores, and do not reflect the number of consumers who subscribed to Disney+ and "Mulan" through other means, such as ordering on Roku and Amazon websites.

The movie "Mulan" is a live-action version of the 1998 Disney animated film "Mulan". To watch this movie, members need to pay an additional $30 on top of the $7 monthly service fee of Disney+. However, members can watch "Mulan" for free after December 4. The company has never tried this before. In addition, in countries without streaming platforms, the film still uses the traditional theater release method.

The coronavirus pandemic has shut down theaters around the world, forcing Hollywood studios to explore new strategies for distributing movies. The paid download model is a test of whether streaming users are willing to pay extra to purchase content.
