Sony Pictures' profits surge, helped by films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

According to foreign media reports, Sony Pictures Entertainment achieved impressive results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2019, with profits from July to September increasing by 73% year-on-year to $366 million (about RMB 2.584 billion). This is largely due to the outstanding box office performance of the movies Spider-Man: Far From Home and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

According to Box Office Mojo data, Spider-Man: Far From Home has grossed $1.13 billion worldwide since its release in July, with overseas box office accounting for 65.5%, making it the highest-grossing film in the history of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Quentin Tarantino's latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has also performed well, earning $369 million so far. The film has not been taken off the screen yet, and an extended version has been re-released in 1,500 theaters in North America.

According to Sony China's official blog, in the second quarter of 2019, except for games and financial services, all other business categories of Sony achieved operating profit growth.
