The translation went wrong! The Godfather director clarifies his criticism of Marvel

The recent criticisms of Marvel superhero movies by world-class directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have caused uproar in the industry and among movie fans. Francis Ford Coppola realized that his award-winning interview in Lyon, France, was misinterpreted after he realized that his words had caused a huge uproar among fans.

Coppola expressed his displeasure to Deadline this week because he felt his answers were misinterpreted. Deadline has therefore retranslated the French interview word for word, and the key passages are below.

Question: Francis, do you agree with your friend Martin Scorsese that Marvel movies are not real movies?

Coppola: I'm pretty sure you pulled that from Martin's statement. If you asked him if there was great work, cinematic talent, cinematic expression in Marvel movies, he would definitely say yes. But his idea of Marvel movies, which is about TV, swallows up all the oxygen and resources. It's more like a theme park trip than what we call cinema. Yes, I agree with him on that level. But at the same time, TV commercials are also cinema. Is it a beautiful form of film? No.

Question: Given the turmoil you describe, why is there no so-called “New Hollywood” today?

A: You know, because of the lack of risk in the production process. Martin said that Marvel movies are not cinema, and he is right. Because we want to learn something from movies, we want to gain some enlightenment, knowledge and inspiration. I don't know what anyone can get from watching the same kind of movies over and over again, and that is Marvel movies - a product without risk. I have said before that making a movie without risk is like having a baby without having sex. Risk is part of the creation, and it also makes the process extra interesting. That's why we can learn from movies after they are created.

There is also a philosophy that says a rich person can be just or unjust. If wealth is obtained in an unjust way, it is just consumption and no contribution. Wealth refers to those things that are just and can bring more feedback to society. The same is true for cinema. Real cinema will bring something and is a wonderful gift to society. It is not just for making money, that is the most 'despicable'.

So Martin was being very nice when he said Marvel movies aren’t movies, he didn’t say Marvel is ‘despicable’, but the kind of movies I mentioned above are.
