On February 25, Bao, a Chinese-themed animated film directed by Chinese-American director Shi Zhiyu, won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Bao is an animated short film directed by Shi Zhiyu in 2018, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, and released by Walt Disney Studios. The short film tells the story of a Chinese-American woman who is frustrated by her empty nest. When a bun she made "comes to life" one day, everything changes dramatically.

Shi Zhiyu graduated from Sheridan College in Canada with a degree in animation, where she developed her love for storytelling and animation. Her greatest influences on her art are Studio Ghibli, Japanese animation in the 1990s, Disney, Pixar, and the works of Yasujiro Ozu, Ang Lee, and Bong Joon-ho.

In 2015, she was commissioned to write and direct Bao. This imaginative and wonderful story is set in the Chinese community of Toronto, Canada, and was inspired by her own experience growing up as an only child. In the summer of 2018, Bao was released as a bonus short for Incredibles 2.
