Original dubbing returns? DreamWorks' classic animation "Shrek the Monsters" will be rebooted

According to foreign media reports, DreamWorks' classic 3D animation series "Shrek the Monsters" has gained many fans around the world, but the latest film in the series, "Puss in Boots", was released seven years ago and won a global box office of 555 million US dollars that year. DreamWorks plans to "reboot" this series.

However, for Christopher Meledandri, the mastermind behind DreamWorks and the "Despicable Me" and "The Grinch" (and the not-so-good "Minions") series, and the founder of Illumination Entertainment, this so-called "reboot" may not be what we imagined.

According to foreign media reports, DreamWorks hired Illumination Entertainment's Meledandri to reintroduce the "Shrek" series to a new generation of moviegoers. The first "Shrek the Monsters" was released in 2001 and quickly became an animated classic, followed by three sequels and a spin-off. The five "Shrek" movies have grossed a total of $3.5 billion worldwide, so it was only a matter of time before the big green monster returned to the big screen.

However, while it's still early days, Meledandri said he doesn't want to replace the original film's voice cast, which includes Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots).

"When you think back on those performances, they're fantastic," he explains. "You could totally go back to the drawing board, but the nostalgic side of me wants to recreate those characters. The challenge for us is to make this not feel like just another sequel in a series."

So similar to the new version of "Halloween" that was released not long ago (maybe this is the only time these two series will be put together), the new "Shrek" movie may be a combination of "reboot" and "sequel." Of course, Meledandri needs to come up with a good story first, and everything has to start from here.

"There are a lot of great things in the Shrek world, but finding a story that is true to this world is a very high standard," the producer said. "You really have to find a narrative that can set this world sailing." So after nearly ten years, can the new version of "Shrek the Monsters" still capture the hearts of the audience? Let us wait and see.
