Rumor: Disney's Pixar Studios will lay off 20% of its employees this year

According to US technology media reports, Disney admitted that its Pixar Studios will lay off employees this year. Earlier, the media revealed that the layoff ratio was 20%, and the team would be reduced from 1,300 to less than 1,000. Disney said that the layoff ratio has not yet been determined and will be determined based on the future production schedule and the number of films.

People familiar with the matter said that the laid-off employees included staff dedicated to Disney+ content - Disney had pressured Pixar to produce content for the streaming media division, which is still unprofitable.

Last June, Pixar laid off 75 employees, including Angus MacLean, director of the box office flop Lightyears, and producer Garin Sussman, marking the studio's first large-scale layoffs in 10 years.

Foreign media Deadline announced the five Hollywood movies with the highest losses in 2022. Lightyear ranked third with a loss of $106 million. The film only received a score of 6.1 on IMDb, making it a poorly rated work in Pixar Studios.

This year's "Elemental City" had the lowest opening box office in Pixar's history, with a global cumulative box office of 496 million US dollars, which slightly saved face.

In the past four years, Pixar's "Soul", "Summer Friends" and "Big Ten" have successively given up theatrical releases and went straight to Disney+ in order to support Disney's streaming plan. This year, these three films will be released in North American theaters in the first quarter of this year. I wonder if this is to appease people.
