The creators of "Game of Thrones" tried to make "Star Wars" before "The Three-Body Problem"

Before Netflix gave Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and DB Weiss a $200 million contract to drop their HBO project and make The Three-Body Problem, the two were working with Lucasfilm on a Star Wars movie. They had not previously discussed the failed project much, but in a recent interview, they finally revealed some details about the project and the problems that led to its failure.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff said he and Weiss wanted to make The First Jedi, which would tell the story of how the Jedi Order came to be. The film would also have detailed the first lightsaber in Star Wars history.

Weiss said: “We were really annoyed when (director) Rian Johnson called his movie The Last Jedi. He completely ruined the prominent name of the project we were working on.”

Johnson is also an old friend of the two, and he is also the producer of the Netflix version of "The Three-Body Problem" that the two are currently creating.

As for the First Jedi issue, Benioff said Lucasfilm didn't respond positively to the "very specific story ideas" he and Weiss came up with. "Ultimately they decided they didn't want to do it," he said. "We totally get it. It's their company and their IP, but we're not the droid they're looking for."

Lucasfilm is currently moving forward with another Jedi origin film, titled Dawn of Jedi, which is being directed by Indiana Jones and the Return of the Jedi director James Mangold.

Netflix's version of "The Three-Body Problem" is expected to premiere on the streaming platform on March 21.
