Amazon's streaming platform will also start showing ads next year

Amazon has previously announced plans to run ads during TV series and movies on its streaming platform Prime Video. The company recently announced the date for the ad investment: January 29.

In an email Amazon sent to customers about its upcoming move to a "limited ad delivery" model, the company said: "This will enable us to continue to invest in compelling content, and grow that investment over a long period of time."

"Our goal is to feature fewer ads than over-the-air TV and other streaming providers. You don't need to take any action, and there is no change to your current Prime membership price." The company also said customers can choose to pay an additional $2.99 per month to avoid watching ads.

Amazon Prime currently costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. (It includes a number of other services, such as Twitch Prime and free shipping on the shopping site, and Prime Video can be subscribed to separately for $8.99 per month.) The new pricing model for ad-free streaming will increase the price of Prime to $17.98 and the price of standalone Prime Video to just $11.98.
