Mario's family characters in The Mario Bros. Movie were designed by Nintendo

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment, has been a global success, grossing over $500 million and becoming the most successful movie adapted from a video game. In this movie, we not only see familiar characters, but also see the families of Mario and Luigi for the first time. In a recent interview, the director of the movie revealed the origins of these Mario brothers' relatives.

In an interview with media Polygon, Aaron Horvath, director of "Super Mario Bros.: The Movie", revealed that the design of Mario's father in the movie is very close to Nintendo's design.

Aaron Horvath revealed that Nintendo provided them with unused character design sketches from many years ago, among which Mario's father was basically made one-to-one based on Nintendo's design draft. This character plays a relatively important role in the movie. He initially did not approve of his son leaving the construction industry to become a plumber. The character was voiced by Charles Martinet, who voiced Mario in the Mario series.

Unlike Mario's father, who used Nintendo's design completely, Mario's mother underwent some modifications compared to the original, while other Mario's relatives underwent major changes.

It is also worth mentioning that the director also revealed that Mario’s grandfather, who was eating at the table with him, seemed to be a boxer when he was young.
