Donnie Yen changes Hollywood's stereotype of Asians in "John Wick 4"

Recently, Donnie Yen was interviewed by GQ magazine and revealed that the original script of John Wick 4 contained many stereotypes about Asians.

Donnie Yen said: "Why is he always called Shang or Chang? Why can't he have a normal name? Why does he have to be so ordinary? Can't he be a little bit innovative? And the clothes are also Chinese style stand-up collars, why are they so old-fashioned? This is the movie "John Wick 4", everyone should be cool and fashionable, why can't he look cool and fashionable?"

After listening to Donnie Yen's criticism and suggestions, director Chad Stahelski agreed to modify the character's name and appearance. Now the character named Caine has some elements that pay tribute to Bruce Lee. Of course, Donnie Yen also said that this is not a criticism of "John Wick 4". He said that he was respected in the film. "Overall, I enjoyed making this movie."

This is not the first time that Donnie Yen has worked hard to change the stereotype of Asians in Hollywood. His role of Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One was originally set as a very stereotypical Asian. Donnie Yen said to the director: "One thing I want to point out is that this character is very stereotypical. He has a serious personality and is stern." Donnie Yen suggested making him blind and having a sense of humor. The team then changed the setting and gave the character more comedic elements, which gave Donnie Yen the opportunity to make some laughs on his own.

John Wick 4 will be released in North America on March 24. Chad Stahelski will continue to direct, Shay Hatton and Michael Fincher will write the script, Keanu Reeves will return to play John Wick. Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama, Bill Skarsgard, Shamier Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada and others will also star in the film.
