According to IGN, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in today's first quarter earnings conference call that the latest sequels of the popular animations "Frozen", "Zootopia" and "Toy Story" are in production, but did not provide any more details, adding that they will share more information about these works "soon". Bob Iger called this an example of the company's unparalleled brand IP. Disney's move to rely on popular IPs isn't entirely surprising, especially after original animated films like Strange Worlds flopped at the box office late last year. And all three franchises Iger mentioned have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Frozen remains one of Disney Animation's most profitable properties, with Frozen 2 earning a massive $1.4 billion worldwide. Meanwhile, Zootopia grossed $1.02 billion and spawned a Disney+ series, with rumors of a sequel swirling for years. Originally released in 1995, Toy Story remains Pixar's golden sign, with the latest installment, Toy Story 4, grossing $1.07 billion. However, last year's Toy Story spinoff, Lightyear, was less successful, grossing just $226 million and receiving mixed reviews. |
