American movie star Adam Sandler responded to critics' negative reviews: It's okay, I understand

Adam Sandler is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. His movies generally do well or even well at the box office, but they don't always resonate with critics. In a recent interview, Sandler said he stopped reading movie reviews after critics slammed his earliest successful film in the 1990s, "Dumb and Dumber."

Sandler, who co-wrote the film's screenplay with Tim Herlihy, recalled to Variety that he was surprised to see how negative reviews the film received.

“When ‘Dumb and Dumber’ came out, my friend who co-wrote it and I said, ‘Oh, great, they’re going to write about it in New York magazine!’ We grew up reading newspapers, and we were going to NYU,” Sandler said. “And we read the first (review), and we were like, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on? They hate us.’”

"And then we thought: 'It must be just this one review,' but then 90 per cent of the reviews were saying 'It's rubbish'."

His subsequent films, The Big Bang and The Wedding Singer, were not well received by all critics, and Sandler recalled that someone called to ask him if he had seen the negative press. But by then he no longer paid attention to reviews of his films.

"I was like, 'I haven't read it, man...' But it all turned out really well. That's OK, I understand. Critics can't relate to all films and what they want to see. I know these films weren't to their taste," he said.

Sandler has in fact received a lot of praise, as critics generally gave him positive reviews for his roles in "Drunk in Love" and "Uncut Gems." Sandler threatened to make a bad movie if his film "Uncut Gems" was not nominated for an Oscar.

Currently, his latest movie "The Scout" is currently streaming on Netflix. On Douban, the movie received a good rating of 7.5 points.
