Harrison Ford to be de-aged in Indiana Jones 5 to recreate the original trilogy with CG

Director James Mangold said that when "Indiana Jones 5" is released, audiences will see a "younger" version of lead actor Harrison Ford.

The untitled film will feature an opening sequence that takes place between the events of 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and 2008's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

In an interview with Empire magazine, Mangold said: "I wanted the opportunity to start with this old style of George (Lucas) and Steve (Spielberg) movies and get the adrenaline pumping for the audience."

Harrison Ford, now 80, shot new footage for the new film, which will be matched with archive footage from his youth using computer software. A jacket Ford wore in the original 1981 film was also taken from storage and replicated for use in the new film.

"While there will be some technical discussion, I hope the audience's reaction is, 'Oh my god, they must have found this footage. This must be footage they shot 40 years ago,'" said producer Kathleen Kennedy.

"We put you in the middle of an adventure, which is what Indiana was looking for, and you immediately get that 'I'm in an Indiana Jones movie' feeling."

For Ford, seeing himself de-aged in the new film was a little scary, and he didn't "want to know how it was done". He added: "This is the first time I've seen (a clip using this technology) and I totally believe it (is real)." However, despite becoming younger, Ford said he doesn't want to go back to that age: "I'm very happy with my age."

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released on June 30, 2023, starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas and John Rhys-Davies.
