Cameron: Avatar 2: The Way of Water is the worst business case in history

Director James Cameron recently revealed the box office revenue that Avatar 2: The Way of Water would need to earn in order to break even. In an interview with GQ, he said the sequel was "extremely expensive" to make and was "the worst business case in the history of cinema."

Cameron said, "It has to be the third or fourth highest-grossing movie of all time. That's the bar. That's her break-even requirement."

The original Avatar movie was released in 2009 and grossed $2.9 billion worldwide on a budget of $237 million, making it the highest-grossing movie of all time, according to IMDB Pro. For A Way of Water to live up to Cameron's expectations, it will have to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which currently sits in third place with $2.69 billion.

Cameron has previously hinted that if the Avatar sequels don't perform well at the box office, the third film in the series may be the last.

"Avatar 2: The Path of Water" will premiere in theaters on December 16.
