Warner Bros. CFO: Reports of Batgirl cancellation are greatly exaggerated

A month after Warner Bros. Discovery abruptly announced in August that it would cancel its upcoming Batgirl film, which was already in post-production, Warner Bros. Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Gunnar Wiedenfels said the resulting media coverage was "overblown."

Wiedenfels made some comments about the matter at the Bank of America Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, according to DEADLINE. When asked if the company’s reputation in the talent community and the agency business had taken a hit due to the cancellation of Batgirl and some other HBO Max series, he responded: “I guess the media just likes to talk about other entertainment mediums.”

The media weren’t the only ones to notice and discuss the decision. Actress Ivory Aquino, who plays Barbara Gordon’s roommate in Batgirl, called out Warner president David Zaslav on Twitter and told him what the film meant to her and others involved in the production. It was later reported that the studio held a “funeral screening” for Batgirl and other films that leadership decided to sacrifice.

According to DEADLINE, Wiedenfels also noted at the meeting that David Zaslav is "looking for" a new head to manage production projects involving the DC Universe. Wiedenfels also admitted that bringing all of Warner Bros. Discovery's assets together is "more complicated than it initially seems," although he believes the combined company as a whole is "continuing to make progress."
