The media reputation ban on Pixar's new animated film "Lightyears" has been lifted. Currently, the Rotten Tomatoes freshness is 84% (69 reviews), and the MetaCritic comprehensive score is 59/100 (29 reviews). Such a score is only average for Pixar. Positive reviews praised the dubbing performance of "Captain America" Chris Evans, as well as some science fiction elements and visual effects; negative reviews focused on the confusing plot, which was inconsistent with Pixar's expectations. The film is directed by Angus MacLean, written by Pete Docter, director of "Soul", and voiced by Chris Evans. The film will be released in North America on June 17. Selected media comments: Variety: As a spinoff from one of modern animation’s greatest and most enduring franchises, Toy Story, it’s one of those Pixar films that feels like half a Disney movie. The Hollywood Reporter: A joyful spin-off with suspense and emotion, Chris Evans gives the protagonist a beautiful voice and uses his enthusiasm to balance heroism and human frailty. Empire: Despite its confusing plot and uninteresting villains, strong voice acting and stunning visuals, as well as the help of Sox the Cat, make Lightyear a decent space adventure. EW: Kids will love Lightyears, and adults will enjoy it, too. The only reason it didn't live up to expectations is that Pixar raised expectations too high. Screen Rant: The film is a clever expansion of Pixar's popular Toy Story series, filled with funny moments, warm emotions, and very gorgeous scenes. Daily Screen: One of Pixar's most popular characters gets an origin story, but it's a lackluster sci-fi adventure without the wit and wonder it once had. Rolling Stone: At its core, this is a lighthearted, enjoyable, better-than-average Disney film that just happens to have the most rewarding Pixar characters and barely feels like a Pixar movie at all. |
