Outlander's Sam Heughan reveals details of failed James Bond audition

Outlander co-star Sam Heughan has spoken about his long-ago chance to become James Bond, revealing he once auditioned for Casino Royale.

"I don't think so," Heughan clarified in an interview with Men's Journal when he was considered as a possible candidate to play 007 after Daniel Craig's departure from the James Bond film No Time to Die. "I think the probability is very low. I'm obviously a big fan of the Bond films. I just watched the latest one again. It's an incredible job."

"I auditioned when they were doing Casino Royale," Sam said. "But I was quite young then. I was in my twenties. Daniel Craig got the part at the time. I think, at least at the beginning, they wanted a younger Bond, back to when Bond was 20."

Heughan and Henry Cavill, two younger characters at the time, ultimately lost out to Daniel Craig. But the idea of a "younger Bond" is still circulating, and even Tom Holland has mentioned it. Heughan thinks it could be a new direction for the show.

“I really think that’s something they might do next — do an original story, and it might work really well,” Heughan said.
