Mortal Kombat movie sequel in development, first one grosses $84 million

According to Deadline, Warner's film studio New Line Cinema has recruited Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter of "Fantastic Four" and "Moon Knight", to write the script for the "Mortal Kombat 2" movie.

The 2021 Mortal Kombat film is directed by Simon McQuoid, marking his directorial debut, with producers including James Wan, Todd Garner (Into the Storm), E. Bennett Walsh (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and McQuoid.

The "Mortal Kombat" movie was released in April last year, helping the US box office set the biggest weekend box office record since the pandemic. The film's first-week box office was $22.5 million, exceeding Warner's expectations. According to Box Office Mojo, the global box office of the "Mortal Kombat" live-action movie is close to $84 million.

The Mortal Kombat movie was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, and was reportedly one of the most watched movies on the HBO Max subscription service to date.

The previous "Mortal Kombat" movie (1995 version) had poor reviews, but it earned more than $120 million at the global box office, and the sequel "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" in 1997 earned $50 million at the box office.
