■Explanation

detail

This robot fantasy is directed by Takahashi Ryosuke, whose previous works were strongly military-themed, such as "Dagram" and "Votoms." The anachronistic world of swords and knights and the giant iron-armored robots have a strong affinity, and the story of the protagonist Jordi's growth is moving. Furthermore, the science fiction theme presented at the end of the story, of a galactic civilization that has stagnated due to its high level of development, greatly stimulated the curiosity of viewers.

■ Review

"Armored Trooper Votoms" is a robot anime produced by Sunrise Japan that aired from 1984 to 1985, and has captivated many fans with its unique worldview and deep story development. This anime, known as the work of director Ryosuke Takahashi, is different from the military-oriented "Dagram" and "Votoms", and has attracted attention as a new attempt to combine fantasy and science fiction.

The story begins in the borderland kingdom of Border, on Earth, the fifth planet in the solar system of the Crescent Galaxy, Ilastant. The protagonist Jordi's father is killed by the Conqueror King Mardal, and his mother Feria is taken away, after which he is raised by his senior vassal Azbeth. In order to get his mother back, Jordi sets out on a journey to find the legendary iron giant, Garien. This journey is a story of his growth and courage, and has deeply moved viewers.

Garian is an exquisite fusion of the worldview of swords and knights and the element of giant robots. Garian's design was created by Kunio Okawara and Yutaka Izubuchi, and its weightiness and beauty enhance the work as a visual attraction. In addition, the delicate touch of Norio Shioyama, who was in charge of character design, also enriches the atmosphere of the story.

The middle to latter half of the story depicts Jordi fighting against Mardal's forces and ultimately heading to Mardal's home planet, Lamprate. Mardal's goal is to revive his homeland, which has lost its emotions and become stagnant, and this theme prompted viewers to ponder deeply. The development in which the Galactic Council sees Mardal's actions as dangerous and tries to erase them all provides an opportunity to reexamine the nature of society and civilization from a science fiction perspective.

The cast is also an important factor in enhancing the appeal of the work. Kikuchi Hidehiro, who plays Jordi, realistically portrayed the protagonist's growth and suffering, eliciting sympathy from viewers. Additionally, Kato Seizo, who plays Mardal, firmly demonstrated his presence as a ruthless conqueror, adding tension to the story. Other voice actors for each character, such as Fuchizaki Yuriko as Chululu and Izumi Akiko as Feria, also played their roles perfectly.

The music is also an important element in enhancing the atmosphere of the work, and Toru Fuyuki's background music skillfully expresses the worldview of fantasy and science fiction. In particular, the music that livens up Gallian's battle scenes left a strong impression on viewers.

Although it was only 25 episodes long, "Armored Trooper Votoms" gained many fans with its deep themes and moving storyline. It continues to be loved by many people even today as a work that transcends the boundaries of robot anime. This work gives courage and hope to its viewers, and can truly be called a timeless masterpiece.

■Recommendation

If you haven't seen "Armored Trooper Votoms" yet, we highly recommend that you do so. It is a must-see, especially for those who like robot anime, fantasy, and science fiction. Jordi's coming-of-age story, Gallian's brave figure, and the deep themes will provide viewers with many moving moments and opportunities to think. The music and character design are also not to be missed. Be sure to experience this masterpiece.
