The main character, Asakura Yoh, is a 13-year-old boy who aims to become the Shaman King. He has a laid-back personality that everyone agrees is easygoing, and he has mastered a new way of using his spiritual power, the Oversoul, and won the first round of the Shaman Fight qualifying round. Yoh's spirit, Amidamaru, is the spirit of the strongest samurai who was once feared and known as a "demon man." Touched by Yoh's warm personality, he became Yoh's spirit. Yoh's first friend, Oyamada Manta, meets Yoh and becomes deeply involved in the world of spirits and shamans.

"Wooden Sword Dragon" is a passionate pompadoured guy searching for the perfect place, and adores Yoh as his "husband." "Osorezan Anna" is Yoh's fiance, and is an Itako with the ability to summon and exorcise spirits. "Tao Ren" is the eldest son of a Chinese Taoist clan, and after fighting with Yoh with all his might, he aims to become the Shaman King to create a world without hatred. "Horo Horo" is a boy who moved to Tokyo from Hokkaido, and uses techniques that use cold and ice. "Hao" is a mysterious boy with a face that looks exactly like Yoh, and has many shamans under his command. "Faust" is the descendant of a legendary necromancer, and participates in the Shaman Fight to bring his beloved wife back to life.
