■ Story

22 years ago, a sudden crustal upheaval caused Lost Ground to become isolated from mainland Japan, and it has since developed into an independent, self-governing territory with a unique society. Kazuma, who works as a jack-of-all-trades in an undeveloped area of the territory, is also an Alter user with the special ability to break down matter and reconstruct it as something else (= Alter). His abilities are superior to those of other users, and he is feared by them, but once he returns home, he is intimidated by Kanami, a shy but strong-willed girl.
One day, Kazuma goes to help his partner Kunihiko Kimijima in a dispute, but is defeated and captured by Ryuuhou, a member of the anti-Alter special forces unit Holy. Kazuma believes in his own power and forges ahead, while Ryuuhou condemns evil according to his own rules. The two share something in common at their core, but are incompatible, and they continue to fight, clashing their Alters against each other.
Meanwhile, in the Lost Grounds, various schemes and conspiracies surrounding the special ability Alter continue to widen the vortex of conflict. Holy hunts down those with abilities one by one while claiming to protect them. Suspecting a connection to the Great Uplift Phenomenon, the mainlanders are secretly plotting to target Alter. Meanwhile, the ever-growing abilities of Kazuma and Ryuuhou collide, causing another uplift phenomenon in the Lost Grounds.
From this, the mainlanders realized that the two's abilities were the key to "the other world," and used Mujou Konji, an Alter user, to set up various traps to get them to open the key. Finally, when Mujou opened the key with the two's powers, he made contact with the other world and succeeded in absorbing a huge amount of Alter into his body.
In order to thwart Mujou's ambitions, Kazuma and Ryuuhou head to the Alter Fortress where Mujou awaits. The two are worn down by his powerful power. But their fighting spirit burns stronger, and they draw out abilities from the other world, evolving even further and finally defeating Mujou. However, the intervention in the Lost Grounds doesn't stop there, and even a large army is sent from the mainland, but Kazuma and his friends defeat them too.
Kazuma and Ryuho continue to focus on the Lost Grounds and have blocked all intervention. However, there is still something important that remains for them. That is, they will settle things between the two of them. The two of them are having a great time "fighting" in the wilderness, punching each other and using their Alter abilities. Eventually, they run out of strength and fall to the ground. However, just after that, a single fist is raised high in the air. Who could that fist belong to?

■Explanation

The Lost Ground is a land that was formed by a sudden, great uplift. In this land, isolated from the Japanese mainland, a special two-tiered society has developed between the residents who have recovered from the collapse and the residents of the ruined areas that still bear the scars of the destruction. Among them are people who are born with special abilities. They are called Alter users, and their powers strongly stimulate the boys who live in a world of the survival of the fittest. Kazuma, a boy who grew up in the ruined area of the Lost Ground and lives relying on his Alter ability, becomes embroiled in various schemes surrounding Alter due to a trivial incident. This is a brilliant fighting action film that depicts the heroism of boys who believe in their own powers and clash with each other.

■ Main Characters

・A boy who does all sorts of things in the ruined district of Kazuma Lost Ground, his past, background, real name, etc. are largely unknown. He lives with Kanami, a girl he met two years ago, in a dilapidated clinic in the ruined district. Perhaps because he has lived alone since he was a child, he makes decisions quickly. With a straightforward personality, he hates compromise and giving up, and acts by his own rule of believing in his own strength and pushing forward. Also, backed by his strong fighting spirit, he has an Alter called "Shellbright" that specializes in striking power.
Liu Feng vs. Alter users A member of the Holy Special Forces, he carries out his missions coldly. As a child, he was a kind and sensitive boy who was confused by his own abilities, but six years ago, he witnessed his mother and his beloved dog, Zetsumei, being murdered by a mysterious Alter user, which prompted him to manifest a completely independent Alter Zetsumei. Since then, his kindness has disappeared, and he has come to hate intensely the Native Alters who disrupt the order of the Lost Grounds with their seemingly arrogant behavior. At the same time, he is searching for the whereabouts of his mother's murderer.
・Kanami Yutaka
A girl who met Kazuma by chance two years ago and has been living with him ever since in a dilapidated clinic in a ruined district. Her parents, background and other past details are unknown. She is extremely shy, and uses polite language when speaking to others, and only speaks her true feelings to Kazuma. She has feelings for Kazuma that are similar to motherly love, and is a reliable person who keeps a close eye on his daily life.
Sherice Adjani vs. Alter A member of the special forces Holy. An expert in intelligence, she sometimes takes command of her unit. When she was a native Alter, she led her team and survived in the desolate area, but her team was wiped out by a hostile force, and she herself was injured and captured. She was saved by Liu Feng and joined Holy. Since then, she has become a brave girl who has decided to dedicate herself to Liu Feng.
A good-natured man from a ruined area who works as a go-between for a jack-of-all-trades. At first glance, he seems like a talkative, easy-going guy, but he's actually a good-natured man with a strong sense of honor. He met Kazuma three years ago, and knew right from the start that he could trust him. Since then, they've been good buddies who go beyond work.
・A childhood friend of Kiryu Mizumori Ryuuhou and the daughter of Kiryu Tadanori, Holly's biggest sponsor. She visited the Lost Grounds from the mainland for the first time in seven years to study the uplift phenomenon and Alter, and took up a post in Holly's strategy information processing and Alter research team. Perhaps a major part of her purpose was to be reunited with Ryuuhou, for whom she had feelings that went beyond childhood friendship.
Martin Sigmar vs. Alter users He is the captain of the special forces Holy, and has all decision-making power within Holy. He was one of the first Alter users to be discovered, and therefore the oldest, but he looks older than his actual age. Although his Alter powers are enormous, he rarely uses them, and only a handful of people within Holy know of their true nature. He set out to establish Holy in order to solidify the status of Alter users in society, and has continued to be active since then, but he is willing to make some sacrifices in order to accomplish his goals in opposition to the strong pressure from the mainland.
Straight Cougar vs. Alter A member of the Holy Special Forces. A man who believes that speed is power.
Mujou Kunji is a special advisor and Alter user who was sent from the mainland to the Lost Grounds. He was originally from a clan that was crushed by the Liu family, and the tragic experiences he had back then caused him to develop hatred for the Liu family and an insatiable thirst for power, so he volunteered to undergo refinement on the mainland. During this time, he caught a glimpse of the "other world," which gave him powerful Alter abilities. He has a jealous and sly personality. As his cold gaze tells us, he is a snake-like man.
