The appeal and reviews of Psychic Detective Yakumo

"Psychic Detective Yakumo" is a TV anime series based on a novel by Kaminaga Manabu, and was broadcast on NHK BS2 from October 3rd to December 26th, 2010. It was later rebroadcast on NHK BShi and NHK General, conveying its appeal to many viewers. This work is characterized by a story development that skillfully interweaves human drama and mystery elements while focusing on the theme of ghosts and paranormal phenomena. Below, we will explain in detail the appeal and evaluation of "Psychic Detective Yakumo".

Story and Characters

The story of "Psychic Detective Yakumo" begins when college student Ozawa Haruka seeks the help of Saito Yakumo, a psychic, to solve the spiritual problems of her friend. Yakumo's left eye is red, and he has the special ability to see the souls of the dead. At first, Haruka is confused by his cold attitude and sarcastic words and actions, but she gradually comes to understand his kindness and suffering, and the two work together to solve various spiritual cases.

The character of Yakumo is particularly fascinating. His past, his relationship with his family, and his conflict with the man with red eyes are depicted in depth. In addition, the story is enriched by the unique supporting characters such as Yakumo's uncle Isshin Saito, detective Kazutoshi Goto, and newspaper reporter Makoto Hijikata. In particular, the relationship between Goto and Yakumo plays an important role throughout the work.

Animation and performance

Bee Train, the animation studio, has succeeded in portraying supernatural phenomena realistically. The visuals of the ghosts and the scenes in which supernatural phenomena occur not only frighten the viewer, but also add depth to the story. Director Toshiyuki Kurokawa also carefully portrays the characters' feelings and relationships, striving to create a production that allows the viewer to empathize with the characters.

Character design was done by Shiba Minako, and each character's individuality was highlighted. Yakumo's red left eye and the creepiness of the man with both red eyes make a strong visual impression. Art director Asakura Chitose's background art is also an important element in enhancing the atmosphere of the story.

Music and theme song

The music was composed by R.O.N and Tomoki Hasegawa, and effectively expresses the fear of the supernatural phenomena and the emotions of the characters. In particular, the opening themes "Key -Phase1-", "Key -Phase2-", and "Key -Phase3-" by R.O.N, along with the singing voice of Jangled Cat (Daisuke Ono), enhance the worldview of the work. In addition, the ending theme "Missing You" features the gentle singing voice of Lisa Komine, leaving an impression on the reader as they listen to the story.

■ Story

It's up to you whether you believe it or not.
But I can see the souls of dead people.

Haruka Ozawa, a university student, tries to help a friend who is "possessed by a spirit."
I knocked on the door of the university's film club.
There was Saito Yakumo, who was said to have psychic powers.
Yakumo is an unsociable young man with unkempt hair and a somewhat closed-off personality.
And only his left eye was bright red...
Haruka was skeptical at first, but when Yakumo told her words from his sister who died when she was young, she became convinced of his powers.
Thanks to their efforts, the truth behind the horrific incident that took place on campus is revealed.
But this was just the beginning...

■Explanation

To help her friend who was possessed by a ghost, Ozawa Haruka went to meet a young man at school who was rumored to have mysterious powers. His name was Saito Yakumo. He was born with a red left eye, which allowed him to see and hear ghosts.

However, he is a cynical and twisted person, and treats Haruka coldly. At first, Haruka is repelled by Yakumo, but in the process of solving the case, she comes to realize that Yakumo has kindness for the ghosts of his victims and the weak.

What will be the outcome of this complex web of dark events involving the red-eyed man who is operating in the shadows, Yakumo's past, Yakumo's old acquaintance, Detective Goto, and the sole surviving girl of a family massacre who has been missing for 15 years?
