The last Power Rangers movie was released in 2017, and there have been no new entries in the franchise since then. Netflix is currently trying to create a rebooted cinematic universe consisting of TV shows and movies. Michael Lombardo, head of global television at Entertainment One (Hasbro's parent company), told Deadline: "Ever since we did the Power Rangers movie with Jonathan Entwistle, we've been in a global mode where this isn't just one show - it's movies after the show, some kids' programming. We found a great writing partner for him - and off they go. God willing, Netflix is excited, we're excited, and we hope to have news soon." Power Rangers has been around for nearly 30 years now, and is a remake of the Japanese tokusatsu Super Sentai series. It often uses the same action scenes to tie in with the original Japanese storyline, and is paired with an English dub. Over the course of those three decades, we've seen 28 TV seasons, 21 different themes, and three movies. It's unclear if Netflix will continue with this extensive canon or start over to attract new viewers, but if it does, there's a lot of history to draw from. From 2017 to now, comic series such as "Shattered Grid" and "Mighty Morphin" of "Power Rangers" have begun serialization. These have given the series a more mature tone while maintaining the original grid. In some ways, they have become more family-friendly, not just for children. The future direction of Netflix is anyone’s guess, and Hasbro bought the rights to Power Rangers for $500 million in 2018, so there’s no doubt the company is looking to make a success of this expensive acquisition. Games, TV, movies, and comics are all on the cards. |
