■ Main Characters

A normal high school freshman who has to move into Kawai House due to Usa Kazuchika's job transfer. He admires his senior, Ritsu, who also lives in Kawai House.
Ritsu Kawai is a second-year student at the same high school as Usa. He is always reading books, and because of that, he has no friends. He is unsociable and expressionless, but occasionally shows a glimpse of the cuteness of a typical high school student. Ritsu's mother is the landlord of Kawai House.
・Kinosaki Usa's roommate, nicknamed "Shiro". Occupation unknown. A true masochist. Basically harmless, but would rather be harmed.
Mayumi Nishikino is a beautiful, busty office lady with glasses. However, she has no luck with men and is always being pushed around and dumped by them, so her emotions are intense, and sometimes Usa and Shiro become victims of those emotions.
Watanabe Ayaka: At first glance, she appears to be a cute female college student, but she also shows a cunning and sinister side when it comes to dealing with men, and she accurately criticizes Mayumi's "useless man catcher" behavior.
She is the caretaker of Kawai House, and takes care of everyone's meals and daily life. Ritsuko is her great-niece.

Review and Recommendation

The unaired episode of We All Live in Kawai Complex is a long-awaited new story for fans and was released as an OVA on December 26, 2014. The episode is included in the 7th Blu-ray & DVD volume and is available from Pony Canyon. The 30-minute episode is based on the original manga We All Live in Kawai Complex by Miyahara Ruri (serialized in Young King Ours by Shonen Gahosha), and is directed by Miya Shigeyuki and animated by Brain's Base.

The story begins when Usa, a high school freshman, begins living alone when her parents are transferred, and she moves into Kawai-sou, a boarding house where meals are provided. Ritsu, a senior student whom Usa admires, also lives in Kawai-sou, and Usa dreams of a fun high school life. However, Kawai-sou is home to other unique residents besides Ritsu, and Usa ends up being manipulated by them every day. Usa's growth is depicted through her interactions with the unique residents, including her masochistic roommate Kinosaki, Mayumi, a beautiful office lady who has had bad luck with men, and Ayaka, a scheming female college student.

The appeal of this OVA lies above all in the personalities of the characters and their relationships. Each character's unique characteristics are skillfully portrayed, such as Usa's purity and growth, Ritsu's bluntness and inner kindness, Kinosaki's masochism, Mayumi's lack of luck with men and her emotional ups and downs, and Ayaka's dark side. In addition, each character, including Sumiko, the caretaker of Kawai-sou, and the other residents, are portrayed vividly, drawing the viewer in.

The cast is also impressive, with the performances of the voice actors, including Iguchi Yuichi as Usa, Hanazawa Kana as Ritsu, Shinomiya Go as Kinosaki, Sato Rina as Mayumi, and Kanemoto Hisako as Ayaka, bringing out the charm of the characters even more. In particular, Hanazawa Kana's performance as Ritsu, while expressionless, perfectly expresses the cuteness of a high school student that occasionally shows, capturing the hearts of viewers. Sato Rina's performance as Mayumi also brings out the depth of the character by realistically portraying the ups and downs of her emotions.

The main staff is also well-equipped, with professionals from various fields such as Takeshi Konota, who was in charge of series composition and scriptwriting, Masaki Mayuzumi, art director, Kayoko Nishi, color designer, and Shigeki Asakawa, director of photography. In particular, Brain's Base's animation production is focused on the details of character movements and background depictions, pursuing visual beauty.

The theme songs are also memorable, with the opening "Itsuka no, Ikuta Kimi to no Sekai" by fhána and the ending "My Sweet Shelter" by Kawai Ritsu (voiced by Hanazawa Kana), Nishikino Mayumi (voiced by Sato Rina), and Watanabe Ayaka (voiced by Kanemoto Hisako). The opening's beautiful melody and lyrics by fhána bring out the worldview of the story, while the ending's lyrics and melody reflect the feelings of the characters and touch the heart.

This OVA is a work that can be recommended not only to fans of the original work, but to all anime fans. It is especially recommended for those who enjoy unique characters and their relationships, and for those who love youth stories. Also, the addition of new episodes in the form of an OVA makes the whole series even more appealing. This work, which depicts the daily lives and growth of the residents of Kawai-sou, will provide viewers with laughter, emotion, and a heartwarming time.

Furthermore, this OVA is an important episode that deepens the worldview of "We All Live in Kawai-sou" and is an essential piece for understanding the entire series. By watching this OVA after watching the TV series, you can discover new sides to the characters and enjoy the story more deeply. Be sure to get the 7th volume of the Blu-ray & DVD and enjoy this special episode.
