Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is set in Tokyo during the Showa period and depicts human relationships through the traditional art of rakugo. The protagonist, Yakudai Meurakutei Sukeroku VIII, was once hailed as a genius rakugo performer, but has now lost his talent and spends his days drowning in alcohol. Then, a young ex-yakuza named Kikuhiko appears before him and becomes Sukeroku's apprentice, entering the world of rakugo. Kikuhiko's talent and passion touch Sukeroku's heart, and through the relationship between the two master and disciple, the charm of rakugo and the human drama unfold.
