"Love Night": A bittersweet story of youth and loveThe TV anime series Ai Shite Night, which aired from 1983 to 1984, was produced by Toei Animation and Toei Agency and was based on the manga of the same name by Kaoru Tada. The 42-episode anime is set in the youthful and hopeful shopping district of Asahino-cho and follows the daily life of Yaeko, the poster girl, and the people around her. It aired every Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. on ANB (now TV Asahi). storyYaeko (nicknamed Yakko), the poster girl for the okonomiyaki restaurant "Manbou" in the Asahi-cho shopping arcade, lives with her Edokko father. She's a devoted daughter who helps out at the restaurant during the day and goes to high school at night. In an apartment in the next town, she lives with Tsuyoshi, a college student with mesh hair, his 5-year-old brother Hashizo with his blue perm, and a fat cat named Giuliano. One day, Hashizo and Giuliano go to Asahino-cho, a place that Tsuyoshi had warned them not to go to, but they end up getting lost. They are caught in the rain and are taking shelter in a drainage pipe at a construction site when Yaeko rescues them. Hashizo falls in love with Yaeko at first sight and is completely captivated by her kindness. Meanwhile, Yaeko gets into a friendly conversation with a university student named Satomi, who dyed a customer's hair purple, and her father scolds her, telling her to "be careful of cars and men!" and sends her out shopping for materials. When Yaeko takes Hashizo and Giuliano back to the shop, her father is thrilled to hear their story and gives them a special favor. One evening after a rain, Yaeko drives Hashizo and Giuliano back to their apartment, but she is about to be late for school and runs off in a hurry. She bumps into Tsuyoshi on a street corner, and when Tsuyoshi tells her "A cute girl like you shouldn't run," and pats her on the head, she slaps him and says "Don't make fun of me!" At the time, Yaeko did not know that Tsuyoshi was Hashizo's older brother. With Hashizo and Giuliano at the center, the girly romance between Yaeko and Tsuyoshi is depicted with bright laughter. CommentaryThe original story was set in the Kansai region, but the anime version was set in Tokyo. Sasaki Isao played the lead vocalist of Beehive, Tsuyoshi, and Ai Takano's songs were used in the singing scenes of the show.
