"Breaking Bad" creator joins new drama: If it doesn't work out, I'll consider coming back

Vince Gilligan is best known for creating the TV series Breaking Bad, which is considered one of the best shows of the modern TV era. After wrapping up that show and the prequel series Better Call Saul, Gilligan is now turning his focus to a brand new series starring Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn. The show, which will be coming to Apple TV+, is described as a sci-fi genre, but not much else is known. Gilligan has now discussed more about the show.

He told the media that the new show is not "heavy" sci-fi, but more "light" sci-fi, with sci-fi elements "at its core". This is already very different from the more realistic "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" series. Gilligan said that unlike "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul", this new show does not have crime elements.

He said: "It's going to be interesting and it's going to be unusual. I don't know how people are going to react to it - whether they're going to love it or hate it or something in between, I can't predict. But I know it's a story that interests me and Rhea is going to play a very unusual role, different from her role in Better Call Saul."

Like “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” the new show is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, “just a completely different world,” Gilligan said.

“The world changes very suddenly in the first episode and it’s going to be very different. This is the modern world — the world we live in — but it changes very suddenly. Hopefully the consequences of those changes will provide drama for many episodes to come,” Gilligan said. “I’m nervous. It’s going to be interesting to see how people react to it.”

Additionally, during the interview, Gilligan was asked if he would return to the Breaking Bad universe for another project in the future. Fans shouldn't expect too much, but anything is possible. Gilligan said that if people don't like his new show on Apple TV+ and his next project, and if fans are calling for more Breaking Bad spinoffs, then he might consider it.

"But what I want to do is put it out there," he said. "That's my life's work. I wonder if there are more stories to tell, but I don't want to milk it dry. I look at other universes sometimes — and I'm not being personal — and it's like, 'Oh my god, they're really going to milk this show.' I don't want to see that happen with Breaking Bad. I'd rather exit too early than too late. But there are no absolutes. That's how I feel right now, but who knows."
