Marvel's Secret Invasion confirms director, to start filming later this year

Marvel Studios' new series "Secret Invasion" has found a director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thomas Bezucha ("Let Him Go") and Ali Selim ("Tower") will helm the series, with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn returning to play Nick Fury and the shapeshifting Skrull Talos, respectively. Other recent stars to join include Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Kyle Bradstreet, the writer and executive producer of the American TV series "Mr. Robot," will serve as the writer and executive producer of "Secret Invasion."

There are too few details about Secret Invasion at this time, and the plot is being kept secret. In Marvel Comics, the story of Secret Invasion is that the Skrulls have replaced some superheroes and tried to gain control of the earth. So far, the Skrulls we have met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been portrayed as refugees. The climax of the 2019 Captain Marvel movie was Captain Marvel fighting off the Kree warriors, allowing a small group of Skrulls to escape safely. Talos and Soren reappeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and we saw them actively working with Fury. If the Skrulls are once again the characters of the invasion, then Ben Mendelsohn's Talos will be in an interesting dilemma.

Bezucha and Selim are both relative newcomers. By comparison, WandaVision director Matt Shakman and Falcon and Winter Soldier director Kari Skoglund have over 50 credits each, while Bezucha and Selim have only a dozen. Of course, how this will affect Secret Invasion remains to be seen. The Russo brothers, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, are also relative newcomers, best known for their work on the TV series Arrested Development and Community before going on to direct some of the most profitable movies of all time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Secret Invasion" will begin filming in Europe later this year, and the series is expected to be aired in mid-2022 or even later.
