Borderlands was filmed with an R rating but was changed in post-production

It's fair to say that Eli Roth's star-studded Borderlands movie wasn't a hit with audiences. The video game adaptation currently sits at 6% on Rotten Tomatoes (it was 0% yesterday) and has been criticized for its "uninteresting" script, confusing CGI, and lack of gore and violence.

While its bland jokes and special effects were obviously disappointing, the disappointment was even greater when it was discovered that the film was actually shot with an R rating.

In an interview, Jimmy O'Dee, stunt coordinator for Borderlands, recalled that he and his team were often asked to increase the level of gore on set. "We blew people's heads off, chopped off their feet, did all these things. But you know, a lot of things happened later."

He continued: "We shot the movie almost three years ago, or just finished it. So, I think a lot of things happened in post, and they saw where the movie was going and the target market. But really, the initial idea and the request was just bloodbath. 'Just do it, and we'll fix it in post.' That was the feeling."

Based on the hit looter-shooter of the same name, Borderlands stars Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett as the iconic characters of Crank, Roland and Lilith, who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora, where she teams up with a new group of companions including Tiny Tina (Barbie's Ariana Greenblatt), Dr. Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Krieg (Florian Montagneau) to embark on a dangerous mission to steal treasure from a secret vault.

O'Dee continued, "Of course, Eli loves horror movies. What's funny is, he was on the second unit, and he came over and he said, 'Uh... cut the ankle off. Yeah, cut the ankle off with a knife and leave these stumps.' Eli loves that kind of stuff. He was great to work with. He was a great time to be around."

Borderlands is currently in theaters.
