Netflix India executive arrested for insulting Hindu taboo kiss in web series

Recently, the news that a senior executive of Netflix, a famous streaming platform, was arrested in India has sparked heated discussions. The reason is that a taboo kiss that insults Hinduism appeared in the hit web drama "A Suitable Boy", which aroused the anger of the public and senior government officials, leading to direct police intervention.

According to the Hindustan Times on the 23rd, the Madhya Pradesh police arrested two senior executives of the streaming platform Netflix - Vice President of Content Monika Shergill and Public Policy Director Ambika Khurana.

The reason is that in the popular Indian mini-series "A Suitable Boy" on their platform, a couple of different religions kissed in a Hindu temple. This "forbidden kiss" was accused of "insulting Hinduism" and was even raised to the perspective of "love jihad".

A day earlier, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra instructed the police to investigate the hit Netflix show to ascertain the purpose of filming the scene.

The web series, titled "The Right Man," is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Indian writer Vikram Seth. It tells a love story set in India in the 1950s, with the main plot revolving around a family's efforts to arrange for their daughter to marry a suitable man. The series was produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and premiered on BBC1 in July and was broadcast globally on Netflix at the end of October.

Regarding the "temple kiss" scene in the drama, Mishra bluntly called it an "obscene scene" and accused it of hurting the religious feelings of Hindus. He said that he had asked relevant personnel to investigate the matter and review the relevant scenes to understand the purpose of shooting these scenes in the temple. He also said that action will be taken against the producers and directors of these scenes.
