IGN rating: 9 points amazing

Console Wars deftly chronicles the battle between Nintendo and Sega for dominance in the gaming market during the 1990s.

IGN's overall review:

Console Wars is a profound and surprisingly interesting study of the corporate culture that defines modern gaming. Thanks to entertaining interviews with some of the interviewees, strategic planning, and a whimsical look at video games in the 90s, an otherwise dry documentary comes alive. With thoughtful exposition and visual flare, directors Blake J. Harris and Jonah Tulis have a distinct love and deep respect for their subject. However, their documentary displays a mature narrative that makes the characters and companies represented in the documentary seem less high-brow. This film is not a history of the manufacturers' carefully crafted games in the 90s, but it reveals the creativity and trivial details of that era with equal relish. Console Wars can be said to be a documentary winner with bytes active.

"Console Wars" is adapted from the original non-fiction "Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation" written by Blake J. Harris. The book tells how Tom Kalinske, president and CEO of Sega of America, led Sega and Nintendo to compete fiercely in the gaming industry in the 1990s, and there was infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America.
