Sony Pictures CEO: It would be a mistake to release Tenet now. We won't do that.

After Warner Bros.' "Tenet" was released simultaneously in China and the United States last Friday (it was not released in New York and Los Angeles), it grossed $150 million worldwide, of which about $40 million (284 million RMB) came from mainland China, and there is still a long way to go to "recover the investment".

Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures

In the view of Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures, it is not a wise move to release "Tenet" recently. "We will not release a blockbuster film that cost $200 million to shoot when the United States has not yet recovered from the epidemic, many cinemas are closed, and the attendance rate is not as good as before. This is really a mistake."

However, Tony did not give an answer as to what should be done specifically. He said, "In the next six months, you will see a lot of strange things happen with film distribution, release date, and marketing, but once we return to normal, we will learn a lot and learn different ways to deal with things. I hope everything will be better. We at Sony will have a small film released this weekend, and the result should be good."

The "small film" he was referring to is the romantic comedy "The Broken Hearts Gallery", which has few new film competition this weekend and can also be shown in theaters for a longer period of time.

This year's box office champion is still "Bad Boys for Life" released by Sony at the beginning of the year (it was released in mainland China on August 14, with a box office of approximately 35 million yuan), which earned 424 million US dollars worldwide.
