The screenwriter of the classic horror film "Child's Play" committed suicide at the age of 63

Foreign media reported that John Lafia, the screenwriter of the 1988 film "Child's Play" and the director of "Child's Play 2" released in 1990, died at the age of 63. The cause of death was suicide.

Don Mancini, one of the co-writers of "Child's Play," said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of our friend John Lafia, one of the founding members of the "Child's Play" family. He co-wrote the original screenplay for "Child's Play" with director Tom Holland and me, and he went on to direct "Child's Play 2," which is one of the most beloved works of the Child's Play family."

“John was an incredibly generous artist. He allowed me to tag along to every meeting and shadow him on set; he taught me more about filmmaking in the making of this film than I did in several semesters of film school. John was also one of the most curious and creative people I have ever met, always taking pictures and recording ideas,” Don Mancini wrote.

John Lafia was born in 1957 and graduated from UCLA with a degree in Film and Television. Before writing scripts, he worked in the art department of The Messenger directed by Alex Cox.

His feature directorial/writing debut was the 1988 action comedy The Blue Iguana, starring Dylan McDermott, which screened in the Midnight Section of the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

In addition to the most well-known "Crazy Kids" series, he also created and directed the science fiction thriller "Thunderbolt" in 1993; the thriller "Rat Wars" in 2002; and the TV mini-series "Aftermath" in 2004.

John Lafia has two children with his ex-wife.
